Technical notes

Meltblown is produced by extruding molten polymer through fine nozzles into a stream of hot, high-velocity air that stretches the filaments to a fraction of the diameter possible with spunbond. The fibres land as a self-bonded web with very small pores and a very large surface area, which is what makes meltblown the filtration layer in masks and filter media.

Polypropylene meltblown is hydrophobic and oleophilic, so it also forms the core of oil-only sorbents. PBT meltblown withstands higher temperatures and aggressive chemistry and can be made in heavier basis weights for liquid and gas filtration. TPU meltblown is elastic and recovers after stretching, which suits it to medical and apparel laminates.

Because meltblown alone is weak, it is usually sandwiched between spunbond layers and thermally bonded. SM, SMS and SMMS composites combine the barrier of meltblown with the strength and abrasion resistance of spunbond in one fabric.
