Sorbent types and how to choose one

Three grades and three colours: which sorbent construction suits the liquid you are cleaning up.

Our sorbents absorb up to 20 times their own weight. The standard range is made in three variations, separated by colour so that a responder picks the right grade without stopping to read a label: oil-only, universal and hazmat. Colour is the first control in a spill plan, because a grade that repels the liquid in front of it does nothing at all.

Oil-only sorbents absorb hydrocarbons and repel water, which is what makes them usable outdoors, in rain and on open water. Universal sorbents take oil, water, coolant, solvents and non-aggressive chemicals alike, and are the default for machine shops and general maintenance. Hazmat sorbents are colour-coded for aggressive or unidentified liquids.

Construction is a separate choice from grade. A meltblown pad or roll can be sonic-bonded for extra strength and durability at no additional cost, which matters wherever the material is dragged, walked on or used for wiping. Fine fibre pads and rolls are built in three layers, a thick absorbent core between top and bottom fine-fibre faces, ultrasonically welded for a smooth, lint-free finish. The dimpled surfaces wick quickly and do not stick to concrete.

The yellow hazmat grade is intended for aggressive fluids: inorganic water-soluble chemicals, acids, alkalis, solvents and toxic liquids. Dimpled and brightly coloured, it is easily distinguished from the other grades, so a spilled hazardous liquid is recognised as hazardous from across the floor rather than after the fact.

Antistatic sorbents are the right choice around flammable liquids and vapours. The polypropylene is treated with a topical solution that dissipates potential static build-up, which suits confined spaces with limited ventilation as well as extreme climates, arctic and desert alike.

We manufacture to order by the container. Grade, weight, width, colour, bonding, perforation and case packing are all set by your specification rather than pulled from a stock list.
