Technical notes
Bicomponent spunbond is extruded from two polyesters at once. A PET core carries the mechanical strength while a co-polyester with a lower melting point forms either a full sheath around it or the tips of a trilobal filament. When the web is thermally bonded, only the CoPET softens, so every filament crossing becomes a bond without damaging the core.
Compared with conventional flat-bonded PET spunbond, the result has markedly higher cross-direction tensile strength, better abrasion resistance and stronger internal bonding, which is why it is specified as a filtration substrate and for parts that are pleated, coated or laminated.
