Custom spill kits and US spill regulations

A spill kit is a response plan in a container. We assemble kits for oil-only and universal spill control and for hazmat work, and every kit is fully customisable, because the right contents depend on the chemicals in the building rather than on a catalogue number.

Kits are built in US volumes: 5, 20, 30, 55 and 95 gallon. The format follows the use. Acid spill kits, duffle bag multi-spill kits, mobile kits on wheels, lab kits sized for a bench, and disaster and hurricane kits for the scale of event that empties a warehouse are all assembled from the same sorbent range.

The EPA publishes spill control regulations for US sites, and a few points carry into every kit we build. Develop a spill control procedure first. Build the kit around chemical- or process-specific materials with the matching personal protective equipment and any other equipment needed, keep it near the work area, and keep it fully stocked at all times.

For liquids, contain the spill by diking, using universal absorbent socks, booms, pillows or other absorbent materials compatible with the spilled chemical, such as activated charcoal, vermiculite, absorbent clay or sawdust. If the spilled chemical is an oxidiser, do not use a material such as sawdust, which can catch fire. Do not let the chemical enter drains or sewers: cover floor openings if necessary, or direct the flow away from them.

Keep kits in a clearly marked location near where the chemicals are used, and make sure every worker knows where the kit is, what is in it, how to use it safely and what its limits are. At minimum a kit should hold personal protective equipment suited to the chemicals present, absorbent material or another means of containment, neutralising material, a shovel, scoops, pans, containers, a vacuum, a broom and a dustpan in an appropriate material, heavy-duty trash bags or containers for the waste, labels to identify the hazardous waste, caution tape to isolate the area, first aid supplies where appropriate, other equipment such as tongs or forceps for broken glass, and communication devices.
