Marine skimming booms for oil spills on water

A marine boom does two jobs at once: it absorbs oil off the surface and forms a barrier that holds the slick, waste and debris inside a working area. In a holding pond that means the contamination stays where it can be recovered; on open water it means the spill stops spreading while the response is organised.

Booms are used on coastal shorelines, estuaries, inland waterways, lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. The 5 inch and 8 inch diameters are the two sizes most operations work with, at 10 feet long and four per case, and they are made for quick deployment under the pressure of an emergency rather than for careful placement.

The oil-only fill captures oil-based substances, solvent-based paints, hydrophobic chemicals, industrial lubricants, greases, diesel fuel, hydraulic fluids, organic solvents, motor oils and non-polar solutes, while repelling water. That is what makes a boom usable on a water surface at all: it fills with the spill and not with the lake. They work indoors and outdoors alike, in containment, booming and skimming operations.

The netting is anti-shed and non-linting, so the boom does not leave fibres behind on the water it is meant to be cleaning. Each boom carries dual clips, which lets you connect as many as the job needs into a continuous length, and an embedded rope runs through it for deployment and retrieval from a bank or a boat without tearing the skin.
