Technical notes
A window treatment has to do two jobs that pull against each other. It has to control light, heat and privacy to a measurable standard, and it has to look like something a designer chose. Nonwoven fabrics have taken a growing share of this market because they meet the performance specification at a lower weight and cost than woven or knitted alternatives, and because they can be engineered to a particular appearance rather than selected from what a mill happens to weave.
We produce two kinds of material for this market. The first is custom-engineered standalone nonwoven fabric used directly in cellular shades, where the fabric is the visible face and the structural element at once. The second is nonwoven laminate used as a backing behind other window treatments, where it provides dimensional stability, opacity or a blackout layer behind a decorative face. Both run from sheer through room-darkening to full blackout, specified per product line.
The construction suits the formats the market actually sells. Cellular shades, panel tracks, roman shades and vertical blinds all use the fabric differently, and all of them benefit from the same underlying properties. Nonwovens pleat easily and hold a crease, which is what a cellular or pleated shade is built on. They do not fray at a cut edge, so they need no hot-knife slitting and no edge finishing, which removes a process step and a failure mode from the converter's line. They are lighter than woven or knit alternatives, so the headrail hardware carries less load and shipping costs less per unit.
The functional properties are why the fabric qualifies rather than simply fitting. UV protection is the first: the material blocks harmful ultraviolet radiation, which protects furniture, flooring and artwork from fading and deterioration over years of exposure. The fabric is durable in daily use, resists moisture in kitchens and bathrooms, and is inherently flame retardant, which matters in commercial and hospitality installations where the local code governs what can hang in a window. Those properties come from the fabric itself rather than from a coating that can wear off.
Where more is required, the fabric is laminated or extrusion coated. Polypropylene and polyethylene extrusion coating and lamination are applied to PET and PP spunbond and meltblown fabrics, single-sided or as a both-side sandwich construction. That is how a blackout grade gets its opacity, how a decorative face gets a stable back, and how a shade fabric gains moisture resistance without losing its hand. Hydroentangled microfilament fabric is specified where softness, drapability and light weight are the priority, and it survives repeated washing without losing its performance, which suits it to commercial installations that are cleaned on a schedule.
