Technical notes

Polypropylene spunbond is the working fabric of agriculture and horticulture. It is light enough to lay over a standing crop without bruising it, permeable to air, water and light, and strong enough to be lifted, moved and re-laid through a season. Because the web is thermally bonded rather than glued, it carries no binder into the soil and can be produced in the low basis weights that row covers need or in heavier grades for ground cover and bagging.

The same fabric serves a long list of uses. Crop covers shield plants from pests, driving rain and extreme sunlight. Mulch fabric manages soil temperature and moisture around the root zone. Frost protection covers hold warmth over a bed through a cold snap and extend the growing season at both ends. Landscaping grades act as ground cover where appearance matters as much as function. Greenhouse and shading fabrics regulate temperature and light indoors. Insect and weed barriers reduce the pressure on a crop without chemistry, while root control bags, fruit ripening bags, seed blankets and capillary matting each use the fabric's permeability to control what reaches the plant.

Width is the specification that decides how a cover performs in the field. Wide-area spunbond can be produced in single widths covering up to 55 feet, which removes most of the seams from a large planting and gives a more uniform protective layer across the block. Edge reinforcement adds tear strength where the fabric is pegged, weighted or wound, and edge printing lets a grower or distributor identify a grade on sight once several weights are in use on the same farm.

The agronomic case for the fabric is straightforward. It captures and retains heat, so plants are protected against cold snaps and the season runs longer. It measurably reduces the incidence of aphids, root maggots, flea beetles and other pests that reach a crop through the air. It acts as a physical barrier against birds and deer, which is often the difference between a harvested block and a damaged one. By holding environmental conditions steadier, it improves plant health and yield rather than simply protecting what is already there.

Grade selection is a matter of basis weight, colour and treatment. Lighter weights transmit more light and suit floating row covers; heavier weights carry more strength for ground cover, bagging and repeated handling. White fabric transmits light for covering, black fabric blocks it for mulching and weed suppression, and other colours are available on request. UV stabilisation is specified according to how many seasons the fabric has to survive in direct sun, and hydrophilic, antistatic and flame-retardant treatments are available where an end use calls for them.
