Technical notes

Wipes are a single product category serving markets with almost nothing in common. Healthcare, household, personal care, industrial and automotive converters all buy roll goods described as wipe substrate, and each needs a different fabric. We manufacture the substrate to the converter's specification across four main types: abrasive wipes, dry household wipes, wet wipes and workplace wipes.

Abrasive wipes are built for heavy-duty cleaning. The nonwoven is impregnated with abrasive particles such as aluminium oxide or silicon carbide to give it scrubbing power, and production bonds the abrasive to the fabric before the material is cut and packed into the finished size. The result removes stubborn stains, rust and paint without damaging the surface underneath, which is why these wipes are standard in automotive, manufacturing and construction settings where a scouring pad would be too aggressive.

Dry household wipes are produced from spunlace, airlaid and spunbond materials, with the choice driven by the balance of softness, durability and absorbency the product needs. The finished material is cut and packed in whatever format the market expects, from perforated rolls to folded stacks. These wipes handle daily cleaning across kitchen counters, appliances and furniture in both residential and commercial settings, so the substrate has to hold together when dry and stay soft enough not to mark a finished surface.

Wet wipes are made by saturating the substrate with a solution matched to the intended use, whether that is disinfecting, baby care or personal hygiene. The fabric is then cut, folded and packed in resealable packaging that keeps the moisture in. Formulations can include aloe vera, alcohol or other actives, and the substrate has to stay strong when wet, release the formulation evenly, and remain compatible with it over the product's shelf life. Workplace wipes go the other way: spunlace and meltblown constructions give the strength and absorbency needed to lift oil, grease and industrial soils in workshops, factories and healthcare settings, and the substrate can be chemically treated to increase its cleaning power.

Hydroentangled spunlace is the base technology behind most of these products. A carefully carded web is bonded by high-pressure water jets, giving a cloth-like feel with the softness and premium hand converters are looking for, in both parallel-laid and cross-lapped constructions. We run premium staple fibres including viscose, PET, cotton, Tencel, PP and PLA, singly and in blends. PET/PA6 microfilament substrates serve the high-specification end: the dense microfilament structure gives a real barrier and filtration capability, high absorbency with quick drying, breathability with good moisture management, thermal insulation and enough durability to survive repeated washing in a reusable wipe. Meltblown wipe fabrics are produced as thermally bonded blends of PP, PBT, PE, PLA and TPU where the application calls for fine fibre.

Four things decide which substrate a converter should be running. Material selection sets the texture, strength and absorbency of the finished wipe. Environmental impact increasingly drives the fibre choice toward sustainable and biodegradable options. Regulatory compliance is decisive for personal care and healthcare wipes and has to be settled before a substrate is qualified. And cost has to be balanced against the other three rather than treated on its own. We manufacture wipe substrates to order and quote them delivered by the 40-foot container to the United States and Canada.
