Technical notes

Healthcare products are made to specifications that leave no room for substitution. A manufacturer of gowns, masks, dressings or filtration devices qualifies a material once and then needs that exact material, run after run. We manufacture medical nonwovens to order against a written specification, which is the only way that kind of consistency is deliverable.

Wound care starts with the fabric's mechanics. Elastic TPU meltblown is produced for tapes, bandages and wrappings because it combines high breathability with outstanding elongation and recovery. A dressing built on it moves with the limb it is wrapped around and returns to its original dimensions instead of loosening, which keeps pressure even and keeps the patient comfortable while the wound heals. Breathability matters as much as stretch here, since a dressing that traps moisture works against the healing it is there to support.

Blood filtration and laboratory equipment ask a different question of the material: what will it tolerate. Meltblown polybutylene terephthalate is specified for these devices because of its chemical resistance, which holds up against the reagents and sterilisation chemistry that would degrade a polypropylene media. The fine fibre diameters that make meltblown an efficient filter are the same in PBT, so the device gains chemical durability without giving up filtration performance.

Medical garments, sheeting and towels use hydroentangled PET/PA6 microfilament fabric, which mimics the touch and feel of a real textile closely enough to be used where a patient is in direct contact with it for hours. Bed sheeting, towels, garments and absorbent wipes made from it are soft, lint-free and absorbent, and the fabric is strong enough to be laundered rather than discarded where a facility wants a reusable item. That combination of textile hand and nonwoven economics is what puts it into medical linens.

Masks and gauze are spunlace territory. We produce spunlace in both parallel-laid and the more robust cross-lapped construction. Parallel laying orients fibres along the machine direction for maximum tensile strength in that axis; cross-lapping balances strength between machine and cross direction, which is what a product stressed in both axes needs. Masks built on spunlace give protection with breathability and a soft face against the skin. Gauze gives high absorbency with softness and no lint in the wound. Polypropylene spunbond covers the barrier and shell layers in gowns and drapes, where hydrophobicity and low cost per square metre decide the design.
